In this blog post, I just want to talk about why the KonMari method is best for beginner organizers. Choosing the right organization method from the start of your journey is vital. There are a lot of different organization methods out there to choose from. At the end of the day, the only thing that’s important is that you find a method that you really like and stick to. But in this blog post, I will tell you why I would recommend that you start with the KonMari method.
When the Netflix series “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” came around. I had already been educating myself about organization methods for quite some time. Comparing different methods and trying to figure out what worked best for me. But from the get-go there where some things that really separated the Kondo method from the rest.
Easy to understand
The foundation of the method is based on one simple question: Does this item spark joy? The goal is to only have items in your home that sparks joy or have a very clear functionality. Only keep things in your home that you love or use daily. This is very easy to grasp even for someone just starting out.
Puts you first
The KonMari method doesn’t impose any unnecessary rules about what you can and cannot have in your home. If you love books, shoes or scrapbooking, the Kondo method won’t make you get rid of these things. It simply asks if it sparks joy. It is quite common that hobbies and collections take up a lot of space in our home, but these things might be very important for our happiness. The KonMari method takes that into account and only suggests that you have a dedicated place in your home for these things.
It is systematic
The KonMari method recognizes several different categories of items that we have in our homes. This system is very inclusive and accounts for every struggle you might face. For each category there is a suggested way of purging, decluttering and storing those items. The Kondo method suggests that we organize things after categories and not after location, like many other methods. The fact that the KonMari method is systematic makes it really easy to make a plan to start organizing and then keep it.
The different category is:
- Clothes
- Books
- Paper
- Konomo (Miscellaneous)
- Sentimental
Helps you to visualize your ideal home
I know that it is easy to feel so overwhelmed by a decluttering or organization project that you never even start. The KonMari method helps you to visualize your ideal home and helps you stay motivated to work towards it. Motivation is ultimately the most important thing, without it chances are that you won’t see it through to the end.
It begins and ends with gratitude
A lot of organizing methods can make you feel guilty or bad because you don’t already have an organized home. The KonMari method meets you where ever you are on your organizing journey. This also makes it very helpful for people with other struggles, like poor mental health for example.
The KonMari method will teach you to give thanks for your home and your belongings. It will make you feel happy to make improvements in your life. Most importantly it will make you feel in charge of your situation, even if that means starting with a mess. That is something I find very unique and difficult to improve on. Somehow Marie Kondo found a way to brainwash me into thinking that cleaning and organizing is a fun activity. I am very grateful for that!
