How to choose artwork for your home decor

How to find art home decor

If you are looking to incorporate more artwork into your home decor, it can be a struggle to figure out the best way to do it. I am on a mission to build a beautiful home. So in this blog post, I teach you some really valuable tips I have learned along the way. I will teach you how I choose artwork for every room in my home.

There is a huge difference between a house and a home. Having art in your home is a really important part of making your space personal. Art used right can be an extension of you!

Let’s just start by saying that investing in art is a totally logical thing to do. You can easily take artwork with you when you move, which means that you don’t have to start over from scratch with your home-building process. Having an art collection of your own will make a really big difference in how fast you settle in a new space.

So here are my best tips for how to find the artwork for your home:

The Kitchen

The kitchen is such a central part of the home, some of the best moments in life are experienced here. Its only natural that you would want to make this space feel special.

The biggest problem I find with decorating the kitchen is that you are usually short on space for displaying things. You probably want to use your countertops for cooking and baking and not displaying artwork.

There is usually less wall space in the kitchen than other rooms since a lot of it already is taken up by pantries and overhead cabinets. That’s why I tend to maximize space by using functional artwork. This way the kitchen still looks decorated but doesn’t feel cluttered or cramped.

By functional art, I refer to cooking conversions, wine guides, butcher charts or other types of informational prints. I have these once at home, they make my kitchen decor look very intentional witch I love!

The Bedroom

The bedroom is your recreational space, it should feel like a haven of calm and tranquility. Try to focus on art that creates a calm, cozy and inviting feeling. What exactly that means to you may differ somewhat depending on your taste and decorating style.

I have a gallery wall with abstract and geometric art prints above my bed and I truly love the look of it. It ties in the colors from my lamps, curtains, and bedding and makes the room look really cohesive. My bedroom gallery wall helps to anchor the whole room.

Here are some examples of the artwork I use!

The Bathroom

The Bathroom is such a forgotten space when it comes to artwork, most people I know have zero art in their bathrooms. That is such a waste of prime-quality art space! Especially if you are short on space in other rooms.

You might want to be a little careful of the art you bring into the bathroom though. For example, I would not recommend putting an original oil-painting or unframed art print in a bathroom with poor ventilation. In my experience though hanging a framed prints in the bathroom is not a problem at all.

When it comes to artwork in the bathroom I do recommend going for a cozy look or a spa-themed decor. After all, you want to feel completely relaxed in your bathroom.

Here are some examples of artwork that would go well in the bathroom.

The Livingroom

This is the room in the house where most people spend the most time. That means it is extra important that the living room expresses who we are. It is also the place where we tend to entertain our guests, which is a good reason to spend some extra time in your living room decor.

You can have a lot of fun with your living room decor but I would recommend going for only a few statement pieces. Bring some really large artwork into space, or build a gallery wall!

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box, maybe you need a huge mirror or a sculpture in your living room? The living room is the best space to opt for artwork that makes an impact. Here is some example of artwork you could go for!

The Office

In terms off motives, the office is a really great space, there are really no limitations in this space. The important thing when decorating an office is that you choose artwork that inspires you, especially if you work a lot in this space. If what inspires you are abstract art, puppies or photos of your family, it does not really matter as long as it makes you feel good. A personal favorite for me is inspirational quotes such as these goodies.

Artwork in other parts of your home decor

If you have additional space such as a nursery or an entryway these are also perfect spaces for artwork. The most important thing to keep in mind is to find a good balance between form and function in your home decor. For example, I have a very narrow hallway! Because I don’t want to make it feel even more narrow, I prefer to keep the walls plain. However, if you are one of those lucky people who have space in your entryway, just go for it!

The nursery is also a very important place to decorate. In terms of nursery decor, I would recommend sticking to a theme of colors or motives such as tropical or arctic animals. A Nursery should be a sensory environment that does not overwhelm yet stimulates. As your kids grow, you might want to bring in some educational elements to for example an alphabet poster. I do not personally have a nursery yet, but I still think it is a very important space to decorate. After all its not just for you but for your little one as well!

  1. I like the idea of hanging a large mirror and gallery wall in the living room. There is a large blank wall on the south side of my living room, so I have been thinking about buying some new artwork for it. I think it would be great to incorporate a decorative mirror with other art pieces to create a gallery wall.
